   N2. SALAMANCA, SPAIN, MARCH 28th, 2015

"I don’t think that the human species got so far just to destroy itself, just when things are getting interesting" Well, yes, it seems like the scientist Stephen Hawking was right: Things are really getting interesting and we still haven’t self-destructed.

After more than two hundred previous failures, a successful test finally marks an inflection point and a milestone in the scientific chronicles of the twenty-first century. This time the chemical elements Chloride (Cl) and Sodium (Na) aren’t disassociated from what we know as common salt, like five years ago. These elements were neither volatilized, nor did another piece of material reappear with different physical-chemical properties, like two months ago. This time, the diminutive little grain of salt safely “traveled” twenty-seven centimeters in the already considered first macroscopic teletransportation in History.

Fleeting: Of course, that’s what it was about. Instantaneous, better said. We journalists who were present, in the diminutive laboratory had our eyes glued to the two screens, -augmented reflection in reality, our myopic lenses- to witness the unheard-of event. Behind us, in the glass nucleus of the laboratory, the cannons, parallel to the colossal Material Decoder pointed to the marble. Frowning, the grain appeared under the first cannon like an insignificant speck. Before the experiment, an intern in a spotless lab coat, horn-rimmed glasses and shaggy hair made us look behind:

It all happened in an infinitesimal time, in null time, for any living being. Three hundredths of a picosecond (a billionth of a second) is the most similar thing to the meaning of “instantaneous”. And that’s how it was. The countdown kept us alert, of course, expressed in seconds, the same ones as always.

After listening to him we think of Henry Ford’s first and most rudimentary automobile prototype in 1893…compared to the “Lamborghini Diablo” of the end of the twentieth century. Today, presumably, we would see this Lamborghini.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1.…

Go.

The grain arrived at the same time that it left!!

After the “miracle”, Roberto Figueroa and Rosa María Punllet, from the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Salamanca, explained some details to us:

-The machine closes an accelerator of particles in miniature, essential to generate the required energy for the process. This was obtained by nuclear fusion and thanks to that, it achieved creating the space-temporal distortion of two extremes. – comments the doctor in chemistry Punllet- Decades ago we thought that in order to create an artificial “wormhole” we would need the energy of 10,000 suns like ours, but that’s not true. It’s not true if the whole process is done in an infinitesimal time. What’s really complex is maintaining it stable, including that fraction of irrelevant time, with anti-gravitational negative energy, also called exotic material. –Her colleague, physicist and mathematician, nods and backs up her affirmation, clarifying things for the inexpert:

-A wormhole, predicted by Einstein and previous scientists, is a sort of temporal-space bridge, a shortcut if you wish, between two points in the universe, between two different times. The worm tunnel connects two independent universes and is known as the Einstein-Rosen Bridge. The Base1 Material decoder analyzed the atomic structure of Sodium Chloride in order to subsequently decompose it into its most basic “bricks”, protons, neutrons and electrons. Not into leptons and hadrons: The energy requirement for it would rival with that which generates various neutron stars and that… –smiling- would make the lab systems blow up.

-Are you referring to the quarks? It seems that the Irish writer James Joyce coined the term and subsequently you, the physicists crudely “robbed” it. Twenty-seven centimeters or an infinite abysm, is it the same for you? –Roberto Figueroa smiled after our questions and finally answered.

-Yes, the hadrons or the quarks ended up appearing in Joyce’s Finnegans Wake , it’s true. But we didn’t rob it, but we borrowed it. The nomenclature was independently proposed in 1963 by the physicists Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig. Later we clarify them in six subtypes, up, down and strange, bottom, top and charm. But don’t forget the leptons, electrons, neutrinos, that grant the material many of their fundamental properties. I must insist that it wasn’t necessary to disintegrate the bricks that form the material, but to teletransport them in their entirety.

Our next experiment will consist of decoding organic material, although I’m afraid that the mosquito, or the microorganisms that we use, will be a martyr for science’s sake. In a grain of salt, it doesn’t really matter where you put its molecules after the decoding, but in a human…

With respect to the chosen distance, two notes…, although I hope you aren’t disappointed for their reason of being: It is the minimum distance that you can place the cannons of the Decoder. And yes, the grain of salt could have appeared in Madagascar, in Proxima Centauri or thirteen billion and a half light years away, in the confines of the “known” universe, but we should determine the exact coordinates and also, it would need more energy than we can generate. Much more.

-I think you know the end of the story that took place in Base2. The quantum teletransport was a success!- Doctor Rosa María Punllet couldn’t contain the happiness that emerged from her hieratical expression. It seemed like she was in a hurry and we had a million questions to formulate. So she left us behind with a clairvoyant answer that dissolved our hopes, like the grain of salt in Base1 – The technical information about the experiment can be found broken down in the memorandum that is being given to our collaborators. For an inexpert or even a medium expert, it’s a text that is absolutely indecipherable: p-branas, Planck longitude, tachyons, are some of the beauties that the scientists use to explain the event to us. When they study it, we will be in the right condition to answer questions in the press interview. I will just get ahead a bit by answering the question that you all have ready for take-off: No, we are still far away from the famous series “Star Trek”, far from teletransporting humans. Our next experiment will consist of decoding organic material, although I’m afraid that the mosquito, or the microorganisms that we use, will be a martyr for science’s sake. In a grain of salt, it doesn’t really matter where you put its molecules after the decoding, but in a human…On the other hand, the information, at a subatomic level, that a human being has, translated into bytes, that is to say, digitalized, would reach a magnitude that would vary between 1030 and 1035. If a computer takes two years to decode/code a human being who wants to travel from London to Rio de Janeiro…he might as well take an hiper-plane! Ladies and Gentlemen, this is only the beginning of the journey.- The doctor closes our visit with a personal refection and a joke: -With respect to other derivations and uses of the Decoder, I am prudent and almost skeptical. I refer to the spectacular failure that harvested, at the beginnings of the century, the Time Travelers Convention, organized by MIT, which says it all. Thank you very much Ladies and Gentlemen. Today is a great day in science. E=mc2  is more in force then ever.
